Newton Village Shopping Centre Expansion – Newton, South Australia
Project Type: Geotechnical Site Investigation – Mixed-Use Commercial Development
Client: Private Builder
Overview
TERRATECH completed a detailed geotechnical investigation for the Newton Village Shopping Centre expansion, a multi-storey mixed-use development with a partial basement and rooftop parking. The works included deep drilling, in-situ testing, and laboratory analysis to assess uncontrolled fill and highly reactive Keswick Clay soils. TERRATECH provided key geotechnical parameters and foundation design advice to support safe and efficient construction.
Key Challenges
Presence of uncontrolled fill and highly reactive Black Earth soils of the Keswick Clay, requiring careful consideration of foundation and slab systems
Significant shrink–swell potential influencing basement performance, pavements, and long-term serviceability
Integrating foundation and retention solutions within a constrained and operational shopping centre redevelopment footprint
Outcome
TERRATECH provided practical geotechnical guidance to manage reactive soils and fill-related risks. The investigation supported foundation and basement design, reduced ground movement uncertainty, and enabled efficient progression of the project’s structural and civil works.
