Geotechnical soil assessment at Bagot Street Medical Centre site

Project Type: Geotechnical Site Investigation – Commercial Development with Basement

Client: Private Engineering Consultancy

Overview:

TERRATECH was commissioned to undertake a geotechnical site investigation for a proposed two-story medical Center incorporating a basement car park with a mechanical car-stacker system. The investigation was undertaken to characterize subsurface conditions, assess the presence of uncontrolled fill, and provide geotechnical design parameters for foundation and basement retention systems.

Fieldwork comprised deep borehole drilling using a truck-mounted rig, in-situ testing, and laboratory analysis in accordance with AS1726. TERRATECH provided detailed recommendations for shallow and deep foundations, basement excavation, retaining systems, and construction considerations appropriate for the constrained urban setting.

Challenges:

  • Presence of uncontrolled fill requiring removal or structural bridging solutions.

  • Deep basement excavation within stiff to hard clay soils adjacent to existing structures.

  • Concentrated loads associated with the mechanical car-stacker system.

Outcome:

The investigation identified key ground risks and provided clear, practical recommendations for foundation and basement design. TERRATECH’s input supported efficient management of uncontrolled fill, mechanical car-stacker loads, and basement excavation in an urban setting. The project was delivered on time and within budget, enabling confident progression to detailed design.
