Culvert Replacement, Nyrstar Facility, Port Pirie
Project Type: Geotechnical Site Investigation - Industrial Infrastructure
Client: Private Contractor
Overview:
TERRATECH was engaged to undertake a geotechnical investigation at an active industrial facility in Port Pirie, South Australia, in support of a deteriorated drainage culvert replacement. The project comprised installing sheet-piled walls along the existing culvert alignment to form a new drainage structure.
The investigation was designed to characterise subsurface soil and groundwater conditions along the culvert alignment, providing geotechnical data to support a sheet pile drivability assessment and detailed design.
Challenges:
Working within a constrained and operational industrial environment with infrastructure traversing the investigation area.
Collecting geotechnical data through variable industrial fill and soft sediments to support drivability assessment and detailed design.
Coordinating investigation works in accordance with strict site safety requirements within an active processing facility.
Outcome:
The investigation successfully defined the subsurface profile and delivered the geotechnical data required for detailed design of the sheet pile retention system. The results reduced ground-related uncertainty, enabling the project team to advance the culvert replacement design with confidence, informing sheet pile type selection and installation methodology within the constrained industrial setting.
